Chris,
 Glad to hear the damage was minimal there could have been a lot more than
the alt..  About 20 years ago I used a coat hanger as a battery hold down,
and well, I don't have to say the rest. I spent about 3 hours with my hands
intermittently on the edge of my non-frost free freezer going through
"withdrawal."  They sell battery shut-off switches that mount right on the
battery. This might be cheap insurance. Tom
