emergency t-5 help

While changing a clutch out of a '85 mustang---I pulled out what looks like
a fill plug on the drivers side of the transmission.  13/16" bolt about four
inches long A clip broke off at the end of the  four inch bolt and fell
inside the trans.  Question is how do i remove the access cover on top of
the transmission.?  Cant get it off because the shift rod is connected
through the shift tube.
