Electronic speedo based on drive-line pick-up?

Seem a little familiar?????

Back when they were just offering "Cruise Control" as an extra cost car
option, good old Pep Boys had a bolt-on unit that used magnetic sensors
mounted on the brake drums or drive line (I forget), connected to the
electronics needed to sense pulse rates to their little black box. It
had a mechanical output that modulated throttle position. About '60's
era, just out of vacuum tubes.
