Doug,
Piston to wall clearance is specific to the material your pistons are
manufactured from. Ensure that it is correct based on the manufacturers
recommendations. Hyperutectic pistons recommend about .001-.002 clearance
and old technology TRW Forged pistons used .007-.010 clearance. If you run
them "loose" never spin the motor when the engine is cold or the "rattling"
of the piston in the bores will fracture a skirt and the motor will need to
come out again.

While the motor is apart you can make HUGE performance gains with a
hydraulic roller cam. In my mind the BEST money you can spend to improve a
60's technology engine.
