Steve,
The best thing to do here (I didn't believe it until I
tried it) is to eliminate the cable!
Build a rod to replace it. I feels so much better and
it won't break if you over-stomp it some night.
I made mine out of some brass rod from the hardware
store. Bent the ends at right angles, soldered some
washers to locate it and threaded and put nyloc nuts to
hold it on. Its worked great ever since and you build
it to YOUR length needs.
