Rob,
I am curious as to why you use a failure mode that you say is not relevant
to make an argument for side loading of the tires? Did you have a sidewall
failure from mounting tires on narrow wheels? That would certainly be
germaine. While I haven't measured the additional contact caused by narrow
vs the mfg's recommendation, I suspect that it is minimal. A concern I
hadn't thought about is that additional side wall flex may affect handling
to some degree (worse). This would be inline with the now popular low aspect
ratio tires and really wide wheels.
