Maybe he was referring to the ceramic-wrap tape that used to be widely available
for the purpose. That stuff would soak up oil, etc. and then when the oil caught
fire, you couldn't put it out. Plus it had such good insulation properties that
(a) the fibers  that touched the header tubes would fuse with the headers, and
(b) the (mild steel) headers couldn't stand the heat and would quickly crack.
The powdercoat-applied ceramic seems to be a MUCH better solution, from all
angles.
