Good find, Bob.
For the Tiger, you want a 10 volt regulator, and preferably one that can
operate with only 2 volts of "headroom" (i.e. the difference between the
input and output voltages). It is also good to get a part that can deal with
the generally hostile automotive electrical environment (lots of spikes from
the alternator, and the wiper and heater motors, and accessories being
turned off). As it happens, the LM2940 series from National Semiconductor is
designed for this kind of abuse, and is also easily available from Digikey
(www.digikey.com). Their part number for the LM2940T10 is LM2940T-10.0-ND,
and costs $1.61 for one. If you buy 1000 the price drops to 56 cents ;)

You should also add in the recommended input and output capacitors (the
Digikey site has the LM2940 datasheet available online, which includes
typical usage schematics), but this is definitely a simple way to fix a
known problem with the fuel and temperature gauges.

Best regards,
Theo
