My first guess is going to be your timing curve is wrong or is
hanging up.
What distributor, wires, spark plugs and plug gap do you have now?

You need to determine what your advance curve is through the rpm range,
mechanical, vacuum and total.
Check the curve with both a cold engine and hot engine, plus check the curve
going up the rpm range and back down the rpm range.

I fixed a 1965 Mustang HiPo last summer with some of these problems; the
mechanical advance was worn and would not advance smoothly plus it would
sometimes hang up at about 20 degrees advanced.

Check the spark plugs for fouling and check each plug gap.

Check each spark plug wire for resistance.

Check each wire with a timing light to make sure the timing light is
flashing at the same rate for each plug.

Check the distributor's mechanical advance parts for wear.

Contact Edlebrock; they know what spark plug numbers fit their head.

Folks:

I have been following with interest the discussion on ignition. The advice I
have read has been first rate. I would like to add a question into the mix.

I have a MKII. The 289 engine is near stock. Modifications include:

Edlebrock Performer RPM aluminum heads

As best I can tell the timing is dead on.

Anyone have some helpful hints on what may be going on and how to diagnose
the problem? Anyone have a recommendation on which sparkplugs to use (note
stock plugs will not fit this head)?

Wayne
