Professional write ups have warned about differences inside oil filter cans.
My personal recommendation, unless you have headers, is to buy the
MotorCraft SVO right angle filter adapter M-6990-A50. as described in:

It is the second one pictured, the first being an Econoline version
without O-ring design seals. It is OK, but the Motorcraft is better.
The filter should be the full size MotorCraft FL1A, probably the best on
the market, also pictured with adapter.
I have used both items for some time. The ONLY alteration I had to make
to a stock motor iron header version is to rounded off the sharp corner
of the chassis mounted motor mount. Just takes a few swipes with a
manual coarse file. Prevents motor torque rocking from letting the motor
mount puncture the canister. No problems, easy to R&R.
The best answer, unless you have tube headers. Then a remote filter,
using the FL1A, is best - perhaps even the stock arrangement, if you
still have the pieces. Rare.
