Listers,
I have used Allan head bolts as well as a number of other types on Race
engines over the years. My preference for this last round of installation
was to use the reduced size ARP bolts that have a 3/8 inch head (3/8 wrench
fitment) and then sprung for the 12 point socket - high quality type. This
permits very small changes in angle of attack ... necessary in the confined
area under the hood. The 6 point Allan head bolt does not have as fine a
adjustment.
The ARP bolts have a shoulder on them that permits good contact with the
header flange and with the normal bolt head configuration permit reasonable
torque as well. I did also fabricate one rear bolt 12 point wrench by
cutting one short to facilitate turning the 12 point box end in the tight
space.

Due to the head heat generated in ALL cases I have used antiseize on head
bolt threads for the headers and the benefits FAR outweigh the consequence.
If you have ever had to r&I a head to get a broken or stripped bolt out you
know exactly what I am referring to.
