For future troubleshooting reference:
Symptoms of B382000991:
- Sporadic idle.
- Odd exhaust note - popping and such.
- Occasionally dies at traffic lights.
- Difficult hot start.
- Runs fine above 2000 RPM
Diagnosis:
- I assumed it was a fuel issue, checked filters, pump, regulator,
floats, carb. gasket - all OK - drat!
- Sat down, drank a Whitbread Ale or two, pondered deeply...epiphany
strikes!
- Spend next hour trying to locate points plate, coil and ballast
resistor.
- Replaced 2-year-old Pertronix electronic ignition/coil with original
dual-point ignition.
- Motor now runs normally, no missing, no stalling.
- Consider celebratory toast, but out of Whitbread.
- Instead, I drive Tiger to Summit Racing and buy new Pertronix.
- Installed new Pertronix trigger unit in distributor.
- Take test drive.
- Tiger runs perfectly.
- On way home purchase a six of Fullers ESB.
- Park car, open an ESB, and reflect on the irony that the most modern
component in the car failed.
Moral:
- Carry your old points ignition with you.
- Lord Lucas ain't the only Prince of Darkness.
- A proper English ale may assist with the diagnosis.
Safe Tigering!
