Mark,
I had originally thought about tricking out the 260 but cost was
prohibitive as everything would have been custom made. No one makes a
kit but I heard that the original racers had used an alternative crank
in the engine and perhaps a 302 crank might work although I am not sure
about clearance for the crank throws and rods clearing the cam. The 302
crank is a 3.0 inch stroke and would yield a 277 CI engine @ .030 over.
You might even get a 3.4 inch stroke AKA 347 and that gives you the 314
CI @ .030 over bore. My 349 kit used a 3.425 inch stroke and in the 260
@ .030 over yields 316 CI. I think the biggest thing that would wake up
the 260 though would be ported heads and a Hydraulic roller cam.
I would be interested in being updated if you go down that path as I
have my 260 still as well and have thought about what I would do with
it. There is also a 3.5 inch stroke available that would yield a 322 CI
engine from the 260 if it can be made to clear the internals and the
camshaft.
The big expense will likely be the pistons and depending whether you go
with the stock length 5.155 inch rods or the 5.4 inch 302 rods.
The big issue will be the bore size limiting breathing and RPM due to
the head selection limitation. It is possible as far as I recall but the
HP for the buck just made me go for the cost effective route.
