Jay,

In this entire thread you have stated the most common sense thing to date.
Drive defensively and stay out to accidents. It works and it means no
smoking, coffee drinking, cell phone use, ECT just pay attention to the
driving.

About 5 years ago, I inquired with the AAA, my insurance company, if they
had any statistics on whether or not all these new fangled things improve
safety. They put me in touch with their employee who monitors these exact
things and used to work for the NHTSA. I listed anti lock brakes, air
bags, crumple zones, submarining engines, pivoting seats. He told me that
everything helps a little in certain limited situations. But, only two of
the items make a significant difference: three point seat belts and side
air bags (not front, but side air bags). Makes sense.

That all said, keep in mind that we're also talking about making sure we
have tires that are not more than 5-7 years old (depending on who you talk
to). Also, even if our brakes work perfectly, and our response time is a
microsecond, the antilock brakes on the car in front of us will beat us.
So, we have to drive that much more defensively.
