If my memory serves me the 283 was the first V8 from Chevy to 1hp/Ci. It is
the basis for the 327 (factory 375 hp) and is also the basis for the 350. While
you are correct about it getting harder to find parts for the 283, just look
through Jegs or Summit and you'll find about a 2 to 1 numerical advantage for
Chevy engine parts over ford. By the way, if anyone is interested I have two
300 plus HP 283 available.
