The Tiger-correct 260 and early 289 have five bellhousing attachment
bolts, where the Tiger II-correct 289 and all 302's have six. The
spacing of these bolts is different between the five and six bolt
arrangement as well, so that's an easy way to tell if it's an earlier or
later vintage engine. If you are looking at a Mk1 or Mk1A then the
correct number of bellhousing bolts is five. The story that a limited
number of Tigers late in the Mk1A production came with (Tiger 2 spec)
289's is just that - a story. If it were true my Tiger would be one of
them.

The number of bellhousing bolts (or their spacing) is tricky to tell
from above but if you can get the car up on a lift then it should be
easier to tell the number of bolts holding the bellhousing to the
engine.
