Probably more than you wanted to know about Calif. Plates.

In Calif., you can use original year plates, with DMV costs and
permission, but they MUST be legitimate CA plates, both of them, and not
replicas. Old plates are sold <http://www.oldpl8s.com/>, and here are
some rules <http://www.oldpl8s.com/faqs.htm>

During the WWII years the State saved on metal, and made the plates out
of a soy bean based plastic. The sun would crumble them, or goats would
eat them. Few around, but so were newly registered cars in the era, but
lots of out-of-state movers for Aircraft manufacturing. Someday I might
tell about the *Santa Monica Douglas Plant
<http://www.flatrock.org.nz/topics/flying/douglas_dream_in_santa_monica.htm>*,
and the cows that were overhead!

I have no information on plates in the early days, but do know that
*Calif Plates in the 1914 and on <http://www.oldpl8s.com/platesale.htm>
were required on both front and rear. It was not a stoppable offense,
but was written up if they pulled you over for some other violation.

With the digital intersection cameras, they do pull you over for no
front plates, as the cameras are a great revenue generator, and tries to
prevent deadly intersection and pedestrian accidents. (IMHO)
