No one said it did. But California declared its
independence from Mexico in 1846 -- not from
Spain in the 1850's -- and, after 25 days, was
occupied by the US, who then established a
military government which ran the area until it
was declared a Territory after the Treaty of
Guadalope Hidalgo ended the Mexican War.
Not a big point, at all. But I did have that
history drummed into me when I attended High
School in Marin County back in the Longago.
