The beauty of old cars is that you can rebuild them yourself.
My generator
brushes went bad so I replaced them myself. I
used an old CAT tech tip. The
brushes were readily available
at the local parts suplly. $2.50 for the
complete set. I bougyht
a spare which is still in the desk drawer.

The olny
trick was to use a round file and 'arc' the brushes so
they make full contact
with the cummutaor.

I went to the Aurora engine /parts shop. The counter man
looked at the generator. H said 'Its an old Ford generator. You'
need a #4
and $6 bearing. He even volunteered to replace the
bearings while I watched.
He warned abot breaking the
casting on the front while trying to remve the
bearuing. He
used an arbor press with supporting sockets. The rear bearing
was simply pried out with a screwdriver.

Worked great and still does. I
loaned it to Gene Padgett since
His went bad and he needed it to drive to
Florida. I got it back
after 8 months. He went trhough 4 or 5 rebuilds
until he got a
good one at Tractor supply. I suspect the brushes were not
arced for a full contact.

The only issue I have is that when I repainted it I
painted over
the FoMoCo decal and I can't find a stencil to use. I can find
a
repro sticker at Mustang Supply abut no stencil. I have a lead
on a shop in
Westmiont, IL that has the stencil and uses it on concurs
 T-birds
restorations. I'll visit them and find out.

[Tigers] Generator -

I just called Bumper to Bumper, who bought out a parts
store that has been in
Benton, IL. since the mid 60s that I know of. He didn't
look the price up but
did tell me he sold one for a tractor a few days ago and
it was around $80
exchange and they are rebuilt units. Jerry, who has worked
there for years
told me as far as he knew, he couldn't buy new generators now,
only rebuilt
ones. I think Allan mentioned in an earlier email he needed an
armature, if
that is still the case, I can check with a rebuilder
(alternators, generators
and starters) to see if they can obtain just an
armature. My guess is they
can. They rebuilt the alternator for my S5 Alpine
and my Chevy Blazer (it was
a gift, as I do prefer Ford products) unless we
get back into the 60s and
earlier, then most any American and many foreign
cars are of interest to me,
especially English and a few from other countries.
Seems every country has
made at least a few cars of interest. I'm just to
Sunbeam poor to consider another car, I will do good to live long enough to
restore all the Beams I have but at least I have a son and a nephew that enjoy
the thought of owning a Sunbeam- preferably a Tiger I'm sure. To all a good
day.
