Seems to me that the float bowl must be vented to atmosphere in some manner,
for the carb to function. The old Ford carburetors went the simplest route
they could, vented right on top of the bowl cover. The very easiest fix is
to install one of the small Holley 2 BBL carbs which have the vent system
inside the air filter ring area on the top of the carb.  Either the 350 or
500 cfm versions work well.

    This is an interesting idea that needs some careful thought and
investigation but I see a problem with where do you safely vent the fuel
vapors and fuel.

 

The best place would be back to the fuel tanks but I don't think there is
enough pressure to do that correctly.

 

A charcoal canister might work but I'm not sure it can take more than fuel
vapors plus it has to be vented properly to recycle the vapors.

 

The best solution would be TBI which does have the correct system for fuel
return to the tanks.

As I cruised around a few web sites to scare up a rebuild kit for my stock
two barrel, I came across some interesting pictures.   The stock 2 barrel
carb is from the "2100" family.  The slightly later but related 2150 family
has a significant difference.

 

I'm suspecting that for one reason or another, fuel came out of the vent on
the top of the fuel bowl, boiling, leaky valve, or whatever, and this is
what fueled my recent fire.  The 2150, instead of just having an open vent
hole, has a little fitting that was apparently designed to accept a hose,
perhaps to drain any overflow to a safe location.

 

So I'm looking for an extremely low profile right angle fitting...  I'm
thinking aquarium hose size...  That will fit under the stock air cleaner...

 

Any other ideas out there?
