Listers,
Last night the long-awaited video arrives in the mail. "Produced by the
Standard Motor Co. Ltd, Coventry". There's the modern 1 million square foot (
or maybe it cost 1 million pounds) factory.
Colour footage from around 1947 showing first the making of crown gears - huge
furnaces cooking them in batches for 12 hours at 900 degrees Centigrade. Lots
of guys in the factory, most wearing vests and ties as they lift transmission
housings onto conveyor belts, insert gear clusters, attach axle housings, etc.
Finally the big event - Sir John Black tours the factory with Harry Ferguson to
witness the 200,000th Ferguson TE-20 to come off the assembly line!
200 tractors a day, and they ultimately produced over 500,000 of just this one
model!
Wait a minute, am I on the wrong list here?
