Brace in drivers footwell - TR4A

I'm replacing the drivers side floor, and I found a diagonal brace welded 
from the bulkhead to the tranny tunnel arch at the bottom inside corner of 
the drivers footwell.  Its sheet metal, about 3" high, and like other bits 
in that neighborhood, rusted beyond repair.  My questions:

1) anyone else have this piece in their car?
2) what is its purpose

Since I have to make a replacement piece out of scrap, if its sufficiently 
cosmetic, I'll just leave it out.
