Historic Amaroo is on again on the 25/26th January and promises to be a
magic weekend for both competitors and sepctators alike.
The circuit lies in Sydney's nothern western suburbs on Annangrove Road,
Annangrove and has received a large amount of additional improvements since
last January as a result of the two Super Tourer rounds hosted at the
circuit last year.
It would have to be one of the best circuits in the country for spectators.
You can either sit high up on Bitupave Hill and see the cars at their
fastest on the main straight while also getting a great view across the
back of the circuit; but my favourite place is above the stop corner where
you can photograph right into the open wheelers and catch the drivers at
work.
As there is a particularly nasty bump in the middle of the corner - which
is impossible to avoid - and a wall with no run off at the edge of the
circuit, the drivers have to work pretty hard.
The biggest growth in the fields since last year have neem in Group N and
in Group Q - especially Historic Formula Ford.
In the tin tops the 1950's Na group is led by Andrew 'The Axeman' Pursey in
his Morris Oxford. Andrew is online so I had better not be too rude about
him ... but I had always thought the Axeman had something to do with his
driving style until I saw his beast coming towards me in the pits at
Eastern Creek and saw the original 'AXE' number plate. He also is believed
to indulge in Morris dancing but that is another story .......
Of the more recent recruits to the tin top brigade , the Group Nc rans
contain no less than 8 Torane XU1s. For those who have never heard of
them, they were basically a Vauxhall Viva sized car with a lengthened
bonnet and a big six cylinder motor stuffed in. They were more than a
match for the big Ford V8s in their day; at Amaroo they need to be better
than the Andrew Smyrnis' Mustang.
In Group Q the Richard Carter/Chris Farrell BDA battle resumes where it
left off at Wakefield Park. Michael Henderson has completed a major engine
rebuild on the Lola T560 and he tells me he has a LOT more ooomph. As he
did a pretty fair job of keeping up with Richard and Chris before he had
any horespower, it will be interesting to see how he goes. Amaroo's slow
corners and big hill makes horespower and good traction patr of the key to
a good lap time.
In Historic FF we have a total of nine starters which is a big improvement
on last year. I expect that Victorian Bob Morrow will prove the best
competition to the Age & Treachery Team of Alan Smart and myself. He was
extremely competitive last year and his Elfin has
been prepared by the guys at Borland Developments.
The field contains quite a variety with Bowin, Elfin, Elwyn, Lotus, Merlyn,
and Royale chassis and should produce some excellent racing.
