I've often thought about getting some sort of video camera to mount to the dash of the truck just so I could preserve any interesting moments I see from my windshield. Wish I would have had one yesterday. Then I could see just how long I was up there.
I was driving up the freeway late afternoon, approaching an area of known congestion. I could see the line of cars ahead of me slowing down. I was slowing too. I saw an opportunity to move left into the next lane. I turn my head to check my blind spot, turn the wheel to make the move, turn my head back to face forward - YIKES!
The late model VW Bug in front of me had REALLY slowed down - I didn't quite clear it. My right front corner struck her left rear fender and her bug became a stunt driving launch ramp, into the air I went. It seemed like I was balanced on two wheels for an eternity and a half, but it was most likely just a second or two and maybe a a hundred feet or so. I landed back on all four with a thud, slowed and pulled off to the side of the road as did the VW and the woman in a van that was right behind me. We all got stopped safely and the woman in the van gets out and says "THAT was AMAZING!" I mean, it was like she's never seen anyone going down the freeway at a 45 degree angle on 2 wheels.
What was amazing is that my truck didn't roll over to the next lane and get whacked by high speed traffic. Both the driver of the bug and myself were unharmed. Once again I think that the experience gained by my time behind the wheel of a race car at full chat was a deciding factor in me still being alive.
Yep, wish I had that one on camera!
