There is an article that is on the Internet that I
believe was written by Shane Ingate on this subject.
It is six pages long and very detailed.

The article is titled, "Main/big-end bearing and
thrust washer replacement on a 1974 Truimph TR6"
Read it, it should answer all your questions and
provide in-site on how to prevent the washer from
falling out.
