Bob---As when comparing most springs, look at the wire size and no. of
coils, along with free length. It could be the old one is just collapsed
some from age.

IF the new spring happens to take longer before opening up the oil
return valve, you'll only notice this when the engine and oil are still
cold. Once warmed up, virtually no oil returns to the sump, via this
return valve. Nor would we want it to.
It's more of a safety to keep hydraulic pressures in check.
