Pim---One shouldn't be able to get the radiator cap so "tight" that it
prevents overflow into the bottle. Bulging hoses suggest that the cap is
not venting as it should. Check/replace the cap with either one of 7lb.
or 13lb., depending on your preference, or the owners manual.  Run the
engine long enough with the cap off to burp out any air in the system,
and fill the overflow bottle half full. The next time you run the engine
long enough to warm it fully, some coolant should flow into the bottle a
few minutes after shut down. A transparent overflow hose will make the
visual easier.
