OK, I'm on a roll now, getting answers for all my problems. The new one is
this: my 1970 PI only wants to run on 5 cylinders or so. Maybe 4, but I
think it is 5. I removed and cleaned the plugs. #4 seemed to be fouled, and
#5 and #6 looked a little sooty, but this didn't help. The other thing that
I know is wrong is that the cable which goes both to the choke and to the
cold start fuel distribution thingy has broken at the choke end. But the
choke defaults to the off position, and the problem occurs when the car is
warm. In fact, it doesn't get cold here anyway, so I don't think that the
choke really comes into the picture.
The fuel pump was checked by the mechanic. It is a Bosch unit and is
functioning well. The wire to the fuel pump was loose, but he tightened it.
The ignition is a Crane electronic unit. The plug wires look pretty new, and
I think they were replaced by the PO not too long ago. The PI system was
rebuilt a few years ago. The mechanic checked this out recently, and said
that it was working well.
I hate to take the car back to the mechanic and lose it for 6 weeks again. I
can replace the choke cable myself. Where should I start looking for the
problem? How can I isolate which cylinder is the problem? Isn't there some
simple thing where I remove either the wires or the plugs one at a time, and
then look for a spark or a change in how the car sounds to find the bad
cylinder? Could it just be something simple like a bad spark plug? Those,
by the way, are almost new as well.
