Today was the day of major setbacks for "Pale-rider" (my perpetually parked
jasmine yellow TR6). I finally got it all back together, turned the key
and...nothing. It turns out that the starter that had worked perfectly fine
before removal from the car no longer works. Nothing whatsoever from the
key. I had power at the post, power at the ignition on the solenoid, but no
action. When I crossed the posts on the solenoid with a screwdriver the
starter spun just fine, only the bendix would not actuate. I bench tested
another starter I had laying around and it worked just fine. I installed it
(much fuss over that top bolt...Does anyone have a secret to getting that
sucker attached to it's nut?...the next time I have the engine out, I'm going
to weld that nut to the engine plate). I did finally get it in, and was
relieved that the starter started, the engine started and I was happy...for a
while. I used that starter a lot today. It was working fine, then just
quit. Same as the first starter. Nothing with the key, power at the post,
power at the ignition, starter spins when contacts are crossed, no
engagement, nothing. Is there something wrong with my wiring that is ruining
these solenoids, or do I just have bad luck? Tomorrow I'll take the starter
to an auto electric guy to check it out. Does anyone have experience with
these after market starters advertised on E-bay? Check out my next posting
to see how the day got even worse.
