Stumble, Backfire

List,
I got my car on the road on Sunday. Still not completely finished, but I have
an appointment with the frame guy this afternoon to hopefully take care of the
misalignment of the hood.

I set the chokes, idle and timing before and the car runs and idles fine. When
I am driving on level ground it will stumble somewhat when accelerating.
However, when I drove down to fill it up and came back up the mountain, it was
stumbling and in some cases backfiring so much that I feared I wouldn't get it
back home. I richened up the mixture, reset the timing and idle and took it
out again and it performed better, but still has some of the same stumble but
much less backfire when coming back up the mountain. I richened the mixture
even more, but have not had a chance to get it back on the road, but will do so
today when I take it to the frame guy.

Anybody got any suggestions as to what the cause is. I always thought the
stumble and back fire were caused by too lean a mixture. If I still have the
problem this afternoon, I will take my carb tool with me and go the other
direction and try a leaner mixture. Any tips are appreciated. Thanks.
