John,
It doesn't mater if the staples are to long, just bend them over & tap
them flat with a small hammer (tack hammer). Besides once they are bent
over they're more likely not to come loose. I would use some spray
adhesive or contact cement as well. If you really want durability look
for Monel staples by Arrow fastener Co. These are stainless & commonly
used on marine applications.
