Tach Noise

My tach is making a constant crunching or grinding sound. Based on my last 
experience with a TR6 some 27 years ago I know it's about to expire. I didn't 
have the $$ to fix it then so I never bothered to track down the cause. This 
time around I want to fix it. (Still don't have any $$, but I no longer allow 
that to hold me back!) 

Is this an internal problem with the tach, or is it associated with the drive 
cable? Any ideas or suggestions?
