Crumbs, I just re-read my note. I certainly didn't mean to give impression
that you had pilfered the car. Just meant please do a search before getting
nasty surprise and losing money when discovering the car was abandoned after
somebody else grabbed it for a ride. It happened to somebody I know.

Is the car equipped with a valid VIN that is for a non-stolen vehicle? If
so, then I have been through this in Quebec for buying a motorcyle with no
ownership papers.
I went to a Commissioner of Oaths and had him stamp a sworn affidavit I had
written describing the sale and the numbers of the motorcycle. I stated the
person selling, the person buying (me) and the identification of the bike
and that to the best of our knowledge the vehicle was the seller's to sell.
I had no difficulty with the motor vehicle department once this form was in
my hand. They drove me almost mad blocking me until I got some advice and
followed the aforementioned procedure.
I do not know what the office of Commissioner of Oaths is called in the US,
but a notary or even a Justice of the Peace should be able to perform the
deed.
