"It appears that my chain has about 1/2" play on the tensioner side (using
my ultra-scientific measurement technique of holding a screwdriver against
the chain and marking the block at each end point of chain flex). Part of me
says to just go ahead and replace it now."
Yes you measured it correctly. Attached are a couple scanned pages (pg
12-44) from a workshop manual. My edition of the Bentley did not have these
sections. Got them from a guy across the pond. It talks about having max chain
of 0.4" so your 0.5" is a candidate, especially since you have your motor
out. Be sure to check the proper sprocket alignment b/t the cam and crank and
shim if necessary. I have heard more than 1mm off alignment is an issue.
The chain from TRF is about $60 and made in France from what I recently
heard from a member. Moss offers one much less for about $12 but I do not know
the manufacturing origin.
I need to do the same thing but am without time at the present. My six is
happily resting on jack stands again!
