Perhaps the answer is in the voltage regulator or stabilizer as the Brits
say???

With the engine running and the battery being charged off the alternator the
regulator may sense any potential overload condition being presented to the
battery and limit the battery to what it needs, not what it can get. After
jump starting a car with a very dead battery the voltage /amp meters always
indicate a higher rate of charge that slowly drops to normal as the battery
gets the smoke pumped back in. Several older cars I have had would do this
after every start even with a good battery.

No proof to the theory, just a thought.

AND, Don M, any book written to explain electricity to dummies was written
with this Don in mind, not you!
