Hi All,
I purchased a differential on ebay and just removed my original in
preparation for the replacement & noticed a few differences in the rear
cover. I then compared the production number on the cases (old unit
CD50372, original CD71040) & it seems the replacement I bought is from
an older car (72 & earlier). The rear cover on my 75 has a distinct
bulge that wraps the ring gear as well as the collapsible spacer on the
ring gear. The ebay unit was in such nice shape I just replaces the axle
bearings & seals & closed it up. Now I'm wondering if I should rebuild
the later unit. The ring & pinion is in perfect condition but the sun
gears in the carrier are very sloppy & make a notchy sound when I spin
them. If I rebuild the original unit I'm concerned about too much wear
on the sun gears and that just replacing the thrust washers won't quiet
these down. Even though these only function when one wheel is not
rotating at the same speed my old unit had a definite vibration under
load as well.

I guess what I'm asking is, are there any reasons why I should rebuild
the later unit rather than just install the earlier unit.

Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.
