Not sure how much of a hassle it was for my PO, but my SV has no VIN plates.
What it does have is a very discrete badge from the State of California
Department of Motor Vehicles inside the door. When I was just starting out
with the car someone pointed out that the DMV assigned number includes the
original Rootes number and was therefore able to correctly identify the car,
its manufacture date, and several other features (I appreciated this). Now
I am sure I will never win a concours event because of this but I am OK with
that.

My $0.02? Try the 'legal' route first, it can't be that bad. If you truly
want a concours car, get one with pure providence or else you'll never be
happy anyway.
