I installed a new timing chain on my SII a couple
weeks ago and just fired it up this weekend.

It has never started that easily. I was very
impressed at first. But then I put a timing light on
it and got wierd results. The light lit up
intermittently so I assumed the timing light was bad
and moved on. I figured that since it was static
timed that I was okay.

The car idled fine but was running rich. I used
colortune to lean out the carbs and got it running
pretty smooth. I let the car idle in the driveway for
a while then shut it down.

When I fired it up again it acted like it was out of
time. It backfired through the carbs and just didn't
want to run. I brought it up to TDC and pulled the
distributor cap and the rotor was pointing right at
the #1 spark plug wire so I know the distributor
didn't move.

I wonder if anyone has seen something like this. I
suppose my next step is to adjust the valves again,
but it seems so odd that it would start so easily and
run smooth, then after shutting it down for an hour it
runs so poorly.

Any ideas? I'm very frustrated.
