It is pretty straight forward with a generator.

You simply turn on the ignition, and 'flash' the field connector (small wire) 
to the live on the battery, or at the solenoid connection.

You do need to ensure your radio is either disconnected, or has a polarity 
switch.

Finally, if you have an ammeter, it will go backwards, until you swap the 
connections over.
