Dennis Hale, everyone should copy your post and tape it to their garage
wall. Right next to that huge stack of receipts for all the parts we
bought but weren't quite right and have no use and no return policies.
Working races and volunteering for support duty is a good way to get that
well maintained "old" car that will let one get started. Plus you'll be
able to know if it's a "deal" or not.
The same can be applied to Prepared and Modified cars in Solo II. It
looks so easy to just convert any old stocker into a competitive Solo II
car. But how many times to you hear (or see people post) that most
Prepared entrants have been around forever and the top of the class is
slow to turnover. There's a reason for that, it's called car development.
Not to mention learning how to drive a totally "new" car every month or
so.
