Trophies are expensive, and prices of everything are going up.

Salina Region has a budget friendly solution.

At the individual events, we just give a little magnet shaped like a pylon,
marked 1st, 2nd, etc., to anyone in a trophy position. People put them on
their cars like battle flags on a WW II fighter plane. Our neighbors to the
south, Wichita Region, does a similar thing, but uses a magnet shaped like
their Witch-Across-the-Moon logo. We get ours from Solotime.

THEN, at the end of the year, we give our "Year at a glance" award. Each
trophy winner, whether they trophied at one event or all of them, gets a
plaque. Each plaque has a head plate with the region logo and "Solo Series
2003" (or whatever) on it. Then a second plate is made for each winner
listing all their trophy finishes ("1st DP - Octoberfast - 10/26" etc.). I
make the master copies on my computer, give the printout to our trophy guy
(Mid-America Awards in Salina, same people to make the Solo Nationals
awards), he runs them on his machines that etch into aluminum and we put
them on the trophy boards. People who trophied just once (about half the
recipients) get a small board 4.25x6" with the plates mounted horizontally.
Those who trophied twice or more get a 7x9 board with the plates mounted
vertically. When I make the individual plates, which also have the
recipients' names on them, those winning a lot have their events spaced more
closely together than those winning a few.

This is not only relatively inexpensive (~$1000 for the season -- one reason
we can still do $15 entry fees), but the awards not passed out at our
banquet are easily mailed -- usually with a copy of the upcoming year's
calendar. Yes, it pays off to mail them out. We've been doing this about 10
years now. One telling response we get is that people seem to like having
one award that sums up their season, as it takes less display space and
still provides all bragging rights.
