karting

i've been thinking of getting one of my kids involved in karting.  any
feedback appreciated on what the basic equipment package is and how much i
can plan to spend in the first year.  we live on the peninsula - are there
regular karting events around here so that we don't need to be trucking off
an hour or two to get some practice in?
