Sometimes, at the butterfly exhaust heat riser valve, gases can leak out of 
the hinge, blow a pencil sized hole in the floorpan, burn through the 
carpet, and voila.  I would look at it this way -- figure the floor pans are 
sealed so the gas comes either from the cowl (doubtful), from the doors, 
also doubtful, or from the rear hatch.  I use my car for everything and when 
I haul stuff in the back with the hatch open, the carbon monoxide turns my 
blood blue. Kim
