Fuel Injection, opinions please?

Someone suggested I ask the opinion of wiseones.net so here goes.

Those of us on this list who have fuel injected TR-8s are running
up against a problem.  The only part of the TR-8's fuel injection
system which isn't standard Bosch L-Jetronic is the Lucas fuel
injection computer (ECU).  So guess which part usually breaks?
Mine's been dead for about 4 weeks now...  :-(

Turns out rebuilt ECU's are still available but at rather
inflated prices ($750 to $1200).  In fact, you'll pay more for a
rebuilt ECU than you would for a new one from Rover (about $500)!

Here's the question.  Bill Sohl received a reply from an engineer
at Rover who basically said the following about the TR-8 ECU:

   "I double checked the facts and
   can confirm that the 4CU (ECU) was also used in the same
   state of tune on pre-1987 low compression (8.13:1) Range
   Rovers with EFI and European spec Rover Vitesse Sedans
   (9.75:1).  These vehicles did NOT use catalysts, but their
   ECU's contained the componentry to utilise lambda sensor
   signals (oxygen sensors), albeit with their internal
   'jumper' connections removed.  Modifications of these
   ECU's to suit North American Spec TR-8s and Rover SD1s
   is, therefore, very straightforward."

The question is:  Can anyone think of a reason why a fuel
injection computer for, say, a Rover Vitesse would NOT work in a
TR-8??  I've heard people saying things like horsepower, torque,
etc. are different on the above cars;  the European ECU's can't work.
I'm not so sure.
