Yea- When finishing wood, the end grains are usually left open, especially
if it will be in a damp enviroment, to prevent warping and rot. This lets
the wood breathe and dry readily. Wood contains moisture, and expands and
contracts as the moisture level changes. Plywood, of course, has end
grains on all edges.
