Actually, a "tonne" is a metric tonne, i.e. 1000kg, which is very close to
the imperial "ton", which as you say is 20cwt. If you thought that was
pedantic, I have a vague recollection that the "ton" just described is
in fact a "long ton", and there is also a "short ton", but I can't remember
what it is.
