Twice this year I've picked places for a bunch of SOLs to meet,
only to find that they've closed, moved, been torn down, or otherwise
are unavailable. While we've ended up having fun, it's getting
monotonous.

So I called Stoddard's. They ARE open, they are PLANNING to be
open tomorrow night, and they will be GLAD to set us up for dinner
along the lines of what we did for Pat Vilbrandt's visit.

To remind other BASOLs, then, here's the scoop:

Meet at Stoddard's on Wednesday, Aug. 24, between 6:30 and 7:00 PM.
We'll congregate in the bar; I think most of you know the face of at
least one person in the bunch, but if not, at least one person usually
wears the Official SOL Shirt, along with any other British motoring
regalia. If all else fails, just look for the grease stains under the
cuticles and you'll find us.

Sometime between 7:00 and 7:30, when it looks like the numbers have
stabilized, we'll take a head count and have them set up a table for
us. This worked really well on Pat's visit, as it gave us all something
to do (drink beer and swap tall tales), and made it really easy on the
people at the restaurant so we got better service; I recommend the
technique for any non-recurring club gathering.

Stoddard's, for those who need directions, is on Murphy Avenue in
Sunnyvale, about two doors down from the intersection of Murphy
and Evelyn (and since that's a T, it can only be in one direction).
The phone number there is (408) 733-7824 if you need to confirm
anything. Dinners are in the $10-$13 range, beer something like
$3 a pint, so budget accordingly.

We'll also probably talk more about the upcoming Historic Races,
about which I'm starting to get really excited. Seeing Roger's
photos put the bee back in my bonnet for beautiful old race cars,
and at Laguna Seca they're about as beautiful as they come, so
I'm starting to pack and plan. I'm sure we will be looking at
Roger's pictures before dinner, so some of the West Coasters will
be able to see a few faces from far away.
