Steve,

In a word: u-joints (ok, 2 words).  The Spitfire has a universal joint on
each swing axle and these joints wear pretty rapidly.  I don't recall what
the official service interval is on these but 15,000 to 20,000 miles is
about the limit in my experience.  It is not a very difficult job to do
yourself assuming you have a large vice or a press for installing the new
joints.  It does require removal of the axles which if you are not careful,
could lead to a bout with Ship-Fitter's disease!
