HI!
I'm looking for some suggestions for my '77 MGB.
First, I have a roll bar in the car. It was installed by the
previous
owner ( 1,2, or 3 I'm not sure). I guess it makes me feel a bit
safer.
I've never had the opportunity to find out if it works or not.
It fits in the car okay but, it doesn't allow the top to be
lowered
properly. Question: keep it or get rid of it. How often do 'Bs
roll?
I have also heard the argument that the roll bar adds to the
rigidity
of the body.?
Next, my windshield was cracked by a mechanic installing a
sunvisor
in the car (apparently during the riveting portion). The shop
replaced the
cracked windshield at no cost. The problem is that this
windshield has
developed a "glitter" effect when strong light hits it at the
proper angle.
It makes night driving and driving into the sun interesting to
say the least
I know that the obvious solution is to replace the windshield
but, I was
wondering if anyone knew of any "fixes" for this sort of
problem.
It's now carburetor rebuild time. I have a pair of SU-HIFs
that have given
good service for two years or so. The question here is: Should
i try to polish
the intake manifold and match the ports while I have the carbs
off? I'm not
sure how much benefit I would get out of this without have the
head worked on
as well. Don't get me wrong. I'm not hoping for some sort of
quick power boost
; I just want to ensure that everything works as efficiently as
possible.
This brings me to my last point. I drive this car daily and
have done so for
7 years (nobody told me that british cars were unreliable for
daily transportation
(well, okay so they did)) . I have reached a time when I no
longer trust the
avaiable mechanics in the area. I know that within a year I am
going to have to
face the probability of an engine rebuild. I think that I can
do it myself.
What I am planning on is as follows:
purchase a sound used engine.
disassemble the engine.
farm out all of the machining.
reassemble the engine.
swap engines.
start rebuilding the old engine.
Does this sound reasonable or even sane? The mechanic I used
when I
lived in Atlanta wants $2800 for a rebuild. I'd say it was
probably worth the
money but, I rely on this car for daily transportation and I no
longer live in
Atlanta. Anybody?
Thanks
garry (it's sounds just like Gary(the second 'R' is silent))
