PLEASE HELP

I almost didn't get back home last night. I was driving and I stopped at a
light. Then when it turned green I went to put the car in gear but there
were NONE. The "slots" that were the gears were no where to be found. I
had to jiggle the stick around and fing were they were. This was very
scary since I was very far from home. I finally got home but now I gotta
figure out what is wrong and how someone can fix it. Any suggestions??
